While today is election day, it’s also the 99th anniversary of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, which opened November 6, 1913. In 2011, NHMLA reopened its 1913 rotunda which showcases the stained glass work of Walter Horace Judson, founder of L.A.’s world famous Judson Studios in Highland Park (Judson Studios is also on Pinterest).
The stunning domed skylight in the rotunda of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County features designs inspired by the English Arts and Crafts movement. Eighty-two years after its installation, the skylight of opalescent glass was restored under the direction of Judson’s grandson, Walter Worth Judson and two great-grandsons, William and David Judson. Here are some close-up pictures of work in progress in PDF format. The restoration project was honored by the Los Angeles Conservancy and the Stained Glass Association of America for excellence in craftsmanship.
